The Aaronic Blessing
Interactive Study

Yahweh said to Moses, “Say to Aaron and his sons, Thus you shall bless the people of Israel: you shall say to them,  Yahweh bless you and keep you: Yahweh make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you: Yahweh lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace.  So shall they put my name upon the people of Israel, and I will bless them.”

Bamidbar 6:22. Yahweh spoke to Moses and said, 23. ‘Speak to Aaron – and his sons and say:

What do we know about Aaron?  What about his sons?

‘This is how you must bless the Israelites.

Bless comes from the OE word blētsian meaning to sprinkle blood.

Blessing came to mean gifting or conferring material or spiritual good

The Aaronic blessing was to bestow the Israelites with their mediating ability.  Catholic ministers are called priests still because they belief is that they serve as go-betweens – between the deity and the congregation.  And there has been a call to all churches to return to this model.  Most, especially evangelical churches have.

You will say:  24. May Yahweh bless you and keep you.

The word spoken over the Israelites included material and spiritual gifts.  While prospering, the word is that the Israelites need to be kept as well, meaning kept from the curses.

Debarim 11:26-8. ‘Today, look, I am offering you a blessing and a curse: 27. a blessing, if you obey the commandments of Yahweh your Elohim which I enjoin on you today; a curse, if you disobey the commandments of Yahweh your Elohim and leave the way which I have marked out for you, by following other gods unknown to you before now.”  (see Luke 6:20ff.

I read this week that the Essenes prayed before and after meals.  Why would they do this in light of the passages we are studying?  First prayer, they were thankful to eat.  Second prayer, that, having eaten, they wouldn’t forget that they would be hungry again. In other words:

 25. May Yahweh let his face shine on you and be gracious to you.

To be gracious means to receive favor – something done out of good will rather than for payback.  The illumination of his face upon our faces is so that some remnant of his image will be retained and seen by other in and out of the community.  Furthermore:

The Forgotten Blessings The Forgotten Blessing: Ancient Words That Heal Generational Wounds
By Aaron Fruh / Baker

Do you sometimes feel as though your path is inexplicably blocked? Do some promises never seem to come true? Do you ever wonder why? The answer may be in the power of the spoken blessing. Pastor Aaron Fruh explains that many who encounter ongoing frustration are living under the shadow of a curse. Discover how you may have been bruised by verbal iniquity and how you can find healing through spoken blessings.

 26. May Yahweh show you his face and bring you peace.’

Where might we then see his face?  In the remnant of the image left on others.  Before and after reminders of who may favor us and where our peace begins – as an undeserved gift.

27. This is how they must call down my name on the Israelites, and then I shall bless them.”

This is how the NAME is placed upon the community – by the earnest prayer of the intermediary – the one in between.  This blessing was not by Elohim, but Aaron.  However, with the pronunciation of the name Yahweh, then YAHWEH will bless them.  The Aaronic blessing kept the community blessed in the Name, and the utterance of the name in the blessing brought forth the higher blessing – that of Yahweh himself.

So these blessings are not a me thing or an I thing, but a we thing – a community thing – and that community is Israel – the Israel that we are.

It’s also a New Covenant thing.

1 Tim 2: … Petitions, prayers, intercessions and thanksgiving should be offered for everyone, even kings and others in authority, so that we may be able to live peaceful and quiet lives with all devotion and propriety. To do this is right, and acceptable to Elohim our Savior: for he wants all to be saved and reach full knowledge of the truth.

For there is only one El, and there is only one mediator between El and humanity, himself a human being, Yahshua the Anointed, who offered himself as a ransom for all. This was the testimony given at the appointed time, of which I (Paul) was appointed herald and emissary.  In every place, then, I want the men to lift their hands up reverently in prayer, with no anger or argument.

Obviously, Paul was singling out men because they weren’t participating in Unity.

UNITY in community bestows not only blessing, but a Oneness and power such that if the community becomes unified to pronounce a blessing over the greater community (i.e. the world), their gifts will likewise be bestowed.

Now this is where we find the granting of peace: through the blessing power of the undivided community.  “It is when we learn to think and pray communally that we deal the death blow to selfishness and isolation thus positioning ourselves for the greatest good of all – world peace.”

Once a group of us were studying the effect of prayer on war.  Each side said that G8d was on their side and each side prayed for and expected victory.  The author of the essay was speculating whether G8d was a spiritual democracy, weighing the prayers of each side and then deciding to help the side with the greatest quality / quantity of prayers.

That sounds a little far fetched, but the author of the essay and the discussion was serious.  And we could here have a very serious discussion about this possibility if we consider the sports teams we root and pray for - or those on which we play.  If Elohim is for us - if we are the good guys - then does he favor us over the others?  jhs

This passage (The Aaronic Blessing) comes right after the Nazarite vow – the individualist’s sacred duty – the penance of the one who has passed out of community to get back into community and thus again share the protection from the curse and the blessing over the community.  After all, it was the blessed communion of our ancestors that brought us to a place of the favor and face-shining of Yahweh.  It will be our dedication to the blessing power of community that will also serve to build a peaceful world for our descendants.

Doxology

Jude 24. To him who can keep you from falling and bring you safe to his glorious presence, innocent and joyful, 25. to the only Elohim, our Savior, through Yahshua the Anointed our Sovereign, be glory, majesty, authority and power, before all ages, now and for ever. Amein.
